What Does an Axe Do?

An axe or hatchet is a versatile chopping, splitting, carving, and pounding tool. It is commonly used for tasks such as chopping wood, kindling, and limbs, as well as for felling small to medium trees. Additionally, it can be used for splitting firewood, setting up camp, and other outdoor activities.

Boy’s Axe

The Original TR Axe is the ultimate mid-size axe designed for packability. Its 2.25-pound 4140 steel head boasts a 4-inch bit and 1.25 x 2.25-inch hardened steel poll. This makes it perfect for limb work, chopping wood, sizing logs, and felling small to medium trees. 4140 is nicknamed “Ordnance steel” because it’s commonly used for making breech and barrel parts for guns and cannons.

This versatile tool is tailored for camp applications and is engineered for excellent balance and power. You can choose a 23 or 27-inch grade A American hickory handle to suit your preferences.

The TR Axe pays homage to Theodore Roosevelt, an esteemed outdoorsman known for his badassery. Embodying his philosophy of “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are,” this axe equips you to achieve a remarkable amount in the wilderness. Its portability allows you to take it anywhere, just like TR would have done on all his adventures.

Winter Godsend

Early in the year, when snow was blanketing the eastern woodlands, I hit the forest to indulge in a little bit of camp cooking. The HH Survivalist Hatchet was the constant partner, well-suited for the harsh cold.

I split several small rounds of various wood for a twig stove to cook a cold-weather meal fit for a king. The Hardcore Hammers Survivalist Hatchet split small fuel cut with the help of a 24-inch bowsaw.

Chopping through the wide-diameter white oak was a powerful display by the Survivalist Hatchet, and performed well.

I split maple and poplar wood for a soft/hard variety for my cookfire by standing the rounds vertically on a stout log and chop-splitting them. This task took minimal effort as the eye of the hatchet and the weight of the head did the work for me.

As smaller dogs do, the HH Survivalist Hatchet picked a fight with a larger log. I chopped through a large-diameter log of white oak in a short time. The 19-ounce head and longer-than-usual 18-inch handle helped get through the log successfully!

Making Camp

I won’t even try to make a Corporal’s Corner-style camp. However, I put the HH Camp Companion through the camp gauntlet. Nothing was sacred. I needed stakes for a tarp, feather sticks, kindling, fuel for a fire, and a stout, sizeable ridgepole.

The Hardcore Hammers Camp Companion completely nailed it when carving stakes for the tarp.

The heavier weight of this axe head for the 16-inch handle had its advantages. A fixed-blade knife can do a lot in a camp setting. However, it can’t chop or split like an axe. A skilled axe wielder can make an axe take over knife duties, creating fine feather sticks and stakes, and striking your Ferro rod.

Carving Crafts with Hardcore Hammers

I made several stakes from green and dry wood. The HH Camp Companion had a super sharp edge, making carving notches effortless. The waffled hammer surface does as well on wooden stakes as on nails. I carved feather sticks by driving the heel into a log, then pulling the sticks back against the edge. Likewise, I also carved feather sticks by holding the axe shoulder under the head and carving down like a knife.

Hardcore Hammers tools are top-notch, and seeing is believing!

The author created feather sticks by pressing the heel into a log and then pulling the sticks back against the edge.
