The options are way more diverse than you might imagine in the realm of manufactured tinder for campfires, bonfires, and fireplaces! Sure, the usual suspects get the job done, but why not sprinkle a little creativity into your fire-starting routine? Here are three unconventional ideas to spice things up!

Building a Successful Fire: Key Elements
To create a successful fire, understanding the role of three essential elements—tinder, kindling, and finger-thumb-sized fuel—is crucial. Here’s a breakdown of each component and how they work together to ignite a roaring blaze.

1. Tinder
Tinder is the foundation of your fire-building process. It consists of small, easily ignitable materials that catch fire quickly from a spark or flame. Good examples include grass, birch bark, or commercial fire starters. When selecting tinder, aim for anything that is lightweight and has good flammability. The goal is to create a small ignition source that can sustain a flame long enough to ignite the kindling.
2. Kindling
Once your tinder is lit, kindling takes over the fire-starting process. Kindling refers to small sticks, branches, or twigs—generally no larger than the diameter of a pencil. This material should be dry and relatively thin, as it needs to catch and maintain the flame ignited by the tinder. Properly arranged kindling around the burning tinder allows the flames to rise, providing the necessary heat to ignite larger pieces of fuel.
3. Finger-Thumb-Sized Fuel
As your fire grows, you’ll need to build up the flame with progressively larger materials, known as fuel. Finger-thumb-sized sticks or branches are perfect for sustaining the fire once the kindling is fully ablaze. This size allows the heat from the fire to effectively reach and ignite these pieces, which in turn provides the continuous heat and combustion needed for a larger flame. Ensure these pieces are dry and well-placed to maintain adequate airflow around the fire.

How It Works
I first saw this little gem in Georgia at the home of Randall’s Adventure & Training’s lead instructor, Patrick Rollins. This is a simple idea when it comes to igniting. It takes an open flame to set this cupcake on fire! That’s right—a match or lighter will work wonders. We were about to BBQ meat skewers and didn’t want the taste or smell of fatwood or other synthetics in our food. Although we were under a waterproof awning, our kindling and wood fuel were damp. The EnviroLog Firestarter Cups were the remedy! Don’t take my word—try it yourself!

In the Jungle
It was August in a very tropical location, and I was jungle camping in Palawan, Philippines. The humidity, heat, and non-stop bouts of rain were in every thought. However, it wasn’t precisely a rainforest. Either way—I’ve been here before!

Dry wood and kindling were a farce. We had food to cook and water to purify, so fire was necessary—and we would have fire! In this case, I gathered the thinnest twigs caught up in tree branches and on the ground. Yes, I said it—on the ground. It was the best of the worst, and I needed them. Once I gathered the minimal quality kindling in monumental abundance, it was time for the haymaker.
The Überleben Tindår Tipi was assembled last. The softwood easily absorbs humidity, so I kept it under wraps until the last moment. Making fire and cooking in the jungle rain is a practice in patience, something I haven’t mastered! However, the Überleben Tindår Tipi pulled it off with a ferro rod igniting the Überleben Tindår Wick, and soon the entire Tipi was a blaze. Success in the jungle!

Pyro Putty
Pyro Putty is what happens when a fire starter gets a tactical upgrade and a personality. Born from the frustration of needing a propane torch to light a cold-weather stove, Pyro Putty was engineered to be non-toxic, moldable, waterproof, and ready to burn in just about any condition—rain, snow, wind, or the damp that makes matches cry.
This sticky, fibrous putty lights with a spark or flame and burns like a candle, giving you a solid 10–15 minutes of fire-starting confidence. It comes in seasonal blends (Summer, Winter, Eco) tailored for different temperatures and even glows in the dark if you pick the citronella-scented Eco blend. It’s like the Swiss Army knife of fire starters—compact, versatile, and always ready to impress your inner pyro.
Now enter the Fire Balls—Pyro Putty’s latest evolution in combustion convenience. These penny-sized, marshmallow-textured spheres are moldable, waterproof, wind-resistant, and burn for 6–7 minutes with a 4–6 inch flame. They’re designed to stick to wood or a stick (hello, torch mode), and they don’t care if it’s -30°F or 130°F—they’ll still light up like it’s the Fourth of July.
Fire Balls are perfect for survival kits, campfires, grills, or that one time your buddy said, “Bet you can’t light a fire in this weather.” Spoiler: You can!
Both products are proudly made in the USA and designed for individuals who value their gear to be reliable, rugged, and clever. Want help building a minimalist fire kit around these? I’ve got ideas that’ll spark your interest.
Winter Use
I met the Pyro Putty team in late January at the 2025 SHOT Show. I’ve seen their stuff before, but this was the first time I had my own stash to use. When I returned to the Northeast, I had cold, snowy temperatures and a solid platform to test their Pyro putty.
I wasted zero time and looked forward to skipping the step of carving tinder from wood by making feather sticks. If everything worked out with the Pyro Putty, I should be able to gather thin twigs and move onto pencil and finger-thick dead kindling. I gathered a heap of these materials confidently. I knew that when I made ignition with a Ferro rod, I’d have enough small kindling to build a sustainable fire quickly!
Get out there and try any of these unconventional ideas and make you every fire a roaring success!
