When it comes to simplicity in design, few knives can compete with the Mini SOCP dagger from Benchmade. However, don’t be deceived by its slim and simple footprint, because this knife can deliver when and where it counts.
The Benchmade Mini SOCP Dagger
All aspects of this knife exude practicality when gripped, controlled in use, and even when stored close by in its versatile sheath. With a sample from the good people at Benchmade, I examined its frame, blade, and ease of accessibility. The Mini SOCP’s pros were apparent early on, but its many subtle benefits were a welcome surprise.
A Unique Design That Works
Upon unboxing this knife, its design was prominently unique. It was one piece of steel, so there is no separate or distinct handle. I enjoy working with these types of knives as they eliminate any handle failure right from the start.

To the uninformed, the design of the Mini SOCP dagger may first appear random and created solely for aesthetic purposes. But this would be entirely incorrect. In fact, everything about this knife’s design oozes practicality when gripping it and wielding it (more on its use later).
First, the concave indentations throughout the center portion fit three fingers perfectly, with the user’s index finger easily slipping inside the rear-positioned ring. Second, jimping on both sides at the base of the blade provides optimal thumb control. Finally, a ridged part at the rear of the ring can be used for striking during a self-defense situation.

Essentially, all aspects of the knife’s design have a purpose. The fact that it looks good in the process is just the icing on the cake.
Knife and Sheath Construction
With the Mini SOCP’s one-piece construction, 440C stainless steel (56-60 HRC) was used for both the blade and handle. The blade featured a powder-coated finish and a spear-point tip. Though the blade may offer a simple design, its accompanying sheath is more complex than I would have anticipated.

The slender sheath is constructed of injection-molded thermoplastic. Its convenient J-hook allows it to be attached to gear or packs with MOLLE webbing. For personal carry, the sheath can be secured to your pants’ waistband or any available pockets. Concealment is not an issue with this knife and its versatile sheath.
More often than not, knives are not carried regularly due to their limited concealability. The Mini SOCP doesn’t have this issue, making it an easy choice for your go-to EDC.

Using the Mini SOCP Dagger
The two-and-a-quarter-inch blade came with razor-like sharpness out of the box (cliché, but true). The backside of the blade, as quoted by Benchmade, was partially sharpened, though this may be a stretch.
Curiosity got the best of me, and with a slight stroke of my finger against the back of the blade, I realized it was quite dull. I assumed that, later in my puncturing tests, the barely-sharpened back would help slightly drive the tip into the material. Time would tell. However, the sharpened end is the star of this knife, and it performed amazingly.

I used cordage, cardboard, and thick duct tape for my tests. None of the materials offered the knife any resistance, except for the cardboard. This was due to the blade’s thickness and the cardboard’s tendency to close in on itself when cut. However, with a bit of force from me, it made it through.
I would recommend against cutting cardboard with any knife (use a razor cutter) because it will dull the blade much more quickly than normal. This is due to the use of hard particles like clay, minerals, dense paper fibers, and glues in its construction.
Manipulation of the SOCP Mini
Everything about this knife-and-sheath combo screams self-defense application, and rightfully so. The sheath allows multiple carry options. For me, the inside right pocket was my choice. I landed on this spot after toying with a cross-carry and even a behind-the-back option with the sheath attached to my belt. It made the most sense to me, as the rear ring was just inches from my hand’s resting place, making it ultra-quick to deploy.

There was a slight tug-of-war going on as I tried to pull the Mini SOCP out of the sheath. The naturally “locked-in” knife was fighting against the stable clip attached to the pants’ fabric. But after a few attempts, I found the perfect balance between force and technique.

Once the knife’s ring was around my index finger, the blade’s movement was nothing but fluid. I could easily switch between a standard grip and a reverse grip with just a flick of my hand. The knife’s narrow midsection, with its ridges and indentations, provided a natural place for my fingers to secure it.
In close-quarter defense, the blade would slice, with no doubt. However, ideally, this knife is all about its rapid puncturing ability. Its small size makes it advantageous against an attacker. They would have a difficult time disarming you, as seventy-five percent of the entire unit is enclosed within your palm. At the tail end of the ring is a modified pommel-like protrusion that offers striking capabilities.
The Mini SOCP felt like a natural extension of my own hand and arm, and with any weapon, that is the ultimate goal.
An Absolute Must-Have
If you denounce this knife solely based on its simplistic design, then you’ll be missing out on greatness. This is not a toy or novelty, but a well-designed, self-defense-applicable life-saver. You’ll get versatility from both the knife and the sheath, tailored to your personal needs. It was created to be carried daily for practical personal protection. After using it, I can say it will do that job perfectly.
No self-defense weapon is any good if it’s left at home. With the Benchmade Mini SOCP Dagger, you’ll have quick access coupled with ultimate discretion, and who can argue with that winning combination?
